About the Event
"Iya Wa: Stew and Stories from Nigeria" is a celebration of Nigerian heritage through its rich culinary traditions and storytelling. Centered around the theme of "iya wa" ("our mothers" in Yoruba), the event honors the flavors, culture, and tradition passed down by Nigerian moms in Chicago.
What to Expect
Prepare for a delightful evening featuring a coursed meal of Nigerian comfort foods, highlighted by Nigerian stew recipes lovingly crafted by our mothers. Each stew has a story, celebrating the flavors and traditions that define home and heritage. Each ticket includes a full four course meal with dessert and a drink. Please show up promptly at 6pm to start the evening together.

Alaase celebrates the soul of the black diaspora, recognizing West Africa as the foundational source of our rich heritage. Our mission is to preserve West African traditions through the contemporary lens of first-generation West African Americans. We aim to create a living archive of cultural heritage, expressed authentically and infused with modern relevance. We use food as the primary medium to share stories and connect people, seeking to make our rich heritage accessible for future generations.

Arabic and Korean for “my mother” and Dutch, German and Hebrew for “grandmother,” OMMI is an intimate pop-up showcasing the diverse communities of Chicago, with menus and products inspired by the most authentic chefs we know: our mothers.Ommi creates experiences aimed at celebrating age-old culinary traditions that have been passed down through generations and shared by families around the globe. We use food as a medium to preserve tradition and highlight the stories of Chicago’s many extraordinary Ommis and the communities they represent.
